Chawl

A chawl (from Marathi चाळ, chā) is a name for a type of building found in Mumbai. They are often multistoried with about 10 to 20 tenements, referred to as kholis, which literally mean 'rooms' on each floor. Many chawls can be found in Mumbai where they were constructed in abundance in the early 1900s to house the people migrating to Mumbai because of its booming cotton mills and overall strong economy.A chawl (from Marathi चाळ, chā) is a name for a type of building found in Mumbai. Just as Sylvia says, similar in many places.... here in Scotland, the cities started building tenement flats some 450 years ago! Even then, folk wanted to be close to the action, so were prepared to live on top of each other!!! Nice post ... I love the just seen peeks of all the cameras being held up!!! YAM xx
